Having first met during the redevelopment of The Tetley in 2012, both have extensive experience of creating and delivering contemporary art and architectural projects in the public realm to the highest standard. We are proposing a ‘Proscenium’ arch, an interactive gateway structure for Leeds Railway Station that welcomes visitors and reveals / promotes the strong cultural offer in Leeds.

The 3D polygon structure provides a striking focal point for passengers arriving at the station by attracting and channeling them through a portal or gate as they travel on into the city centre. The structure is inspired by the recessed coffers found in the ceiling of the 1967 South Concourse.

The proscenium structure can be branded in seasonal / festival colours eg British Art Show with graphics that wrap over and around different surfaces for maximum visibility. Four HD screens deliver live information using existing data platforms such as Leeds Inspired and Twitter and display adverts about the festival and other cultural events in Leeds. The proscenium structure can also be used as a location for cultural organisations to promote events and sell tickets on a temporary basis. In this manner the structure becomes a pavilion.

The physical presence of the proscenium gateway and its digital capability will ensure audiences of all ages and backgrounds, city centre dwellers, workers and visitors will be able to access to cultural content either in person or remotely.
