This contemporary architectural pavilion enhances visitor experience while safeguarding wildlife. The linear form shields and protects the view and environments so that visitor movements do not disturb the birds and the potential for spotting is greatly enhanced.
We have located the building towards the northern edge of the site facing, north, north-west, north-east. This provides 180 degrees of viewing from the facility. The north facing character means that viewing windows do not need to be shaded and there is little risk of solar gain. The area between the road and the facility establishes a new open space accessible to visitors with views across the stream and down the reservoir. A screen wall extends the building to ensure that visitor activity in this are doesn’t distract the birds or the viewing experience from inside the hide. The screen wall also allows for protected views of the natural habitats without having to enter the building.
The design of the proposed wildlife centre has developed as the result of a need for a community asset which is open to the public throughout the year. Gouthwaite has an active bird watching community which would benefit from the facility and provide much needed support to its maintenance and use. The scheme would contribute to local education as it informs the public , from schoolchildren to keen birdwatchers within this area of outstanding natural beauty. This would have a positive impact on the local economy through environmental tourism whilst promoting and supporting other local attractions.
